A Journey Through the Measurement Block – Grade 3

Measurement is not just about numbers and units,it is about helping children experience the world through their bodies, senses, and actions. Our Measurement Block was designed to do exactly this—allowing children to live the concept before learning to label it.

We began our journey with non-standard measurements, using the most familiar tools the children have—their own bodies. Through outdoor activities, the children measured spaces using hand spans, cubits, footsteps, and arm lengths. Measuring pathways and classroom objects brought great excitement and curiosity.

This approach helped children understand that measurement is about comparison and observation, not just numbers. Almost all the children were deeply engaged, and concepts were grasped naturally through movement and repetition.

Once the children were confident with non-standard units, we gently introduced standard measurements—kilometre, metre, centimetre, and millimetre. These ideas were brought alive through a story-based approach called Krishnamaitriya, which helped children connect abstract units to meaningful experiences.
The story became a bridge between imagination and understanding. Children illustrated these concepts beautifully in their Main Lesson Books (MLB), reflecting both comprehension and creativity. To deepen their understanding, each child created a 30-centimetre scale.

They carefully smoothened the scale, marked it at home, and brought it back to class for use. This hands-on activity strengthened their connection with standard units and made measurement a personal experience.
Using their own scales, children measured objects around them and explored simple conversions—from metres to centimetres and centimetres to millimetres.h Small multiplication activities helped them see the relationships between units in a practical way
